Nylas

The incumbent email/calendar API (founded 2015, $175M raised) launched Agent Accounts in June 2026: hosted inboxes plus calendars for agents, matching AgentMail's free tier and enforcing SES-style bounce and complaint pauses.

The read
The best-funded entrant in agent email, bundling inbox and calendar into one identity. Its documented abuse controls are the strictest in the category, and its per-account pricing still rules it out as a cold-email mailbox layer.

Nylas is the API developers use to read and send from a human's Gmail, Outlook, Exchange or IMAP account through one schema. In June 2026 it added the other half: Agent Accounts, hosted mailboxes and calendars that belong to an agent rather than a person. It now sells both models AgentMail's own comparison pages describe as separate categories.

What stands out is how directly it copied the challenger. The Agent Accounts free tier is 3 accounts, 3,000 emails a month and 3 GB of storage, the same numbers as AgentMail's free plan. Nylas announced general availability, after a beta that began in April 2026 (changelog), with a hosted MCP server, a CLI and skill packs for Claude, Cursor, Codex and 30+ coding environments (press release, 17 June 2026).

Source: nylas.com/pricing and usage limits, as of October 2026. Nylas's own August 2026 comparison post quoted "$15/mo includes 20 Agent Accounts, then $0.20", so the pricing has moved within two months.

At $0.40 per extra Agent Account and $0.80 per 1,000 emails, a 500-inbox fleet on Pro costs about $229 a month before email overage. That is cheaper per inbox than Workspace but, as with AgentMail, these are not Google or Microsoft mailboxes (Google vs Microsoft vs SMTP).

Who uses it and why

Nylas reports "34.5 billion API transactions monthly" and "thousands of production applications" (press release, June 2026). In 2021 it had 80,000 developers. The core buyers are CRMs, ATSs and scheduling tools that need their users' real inboxes. Agent Accounts targets the same product teams when their agent needs its own address and calendar, for example to book meetings it negotiated over email.

Gap in the record

No Agent Accounts adoption figure was found. The press release gives no count of agent customers.

Where it is strong

  • Calendar plus email in one identity. It is the only vendor here where an agent can send from its own inbox and accept invites on its own calendar, a claim Nylas makes in its own comparison.
  • Both models in one contract. A product can read a rep's real Outlook and give its agent a separate address without a second vendor.
  • Documented abuse enforcement. Bounce rate of 5% or more puts an account under review and 10% pauses it; complaints of 0.1% trigger review and 0.5% a pause; pauses "do not clear themselves on a timer" (usage limits). These match Amazon SES's enforcement thresholds.
  • Compliance. SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, ISO 27001/27701 (press release).

Where it is weak

  • Per-account pricing for human mailboxes. At $2.00–2.25 per connected account, Nylas is the most expensive way to run a cold-email mailbox layer (Build costs and team).
  • Agent Accounts has been GA for under four months (beta since April 2026). Pricing has already changed once, and limits on Free and Essentials are hard caps.
  • No cold-email posture. The acceptable-use policy URL returned 404 to this pass. The thresholds above leave little room for cold volume: a 0.1% complaint rate is a few spam clicks at low volume.
Not verified

Nylas's position on cold B2B outreach from Agent Accounts could not be verified. Only the reputation thresholds and an unspecified "abuse restriction" power are documented.

Trajectory

Nylas is turning its unified API into an "agent communications" platform: hosted MCP at mcp.us.nylas.com, CLI, skills, and identity bundles. Its scale and enterprise compliance mean AgentMail cannot win on trust alone. The open question is whether Nylas reprices connected accounts to compete with agent-native per-inbox prices.

What this means for an entrant

  • Do not build on Nylas connected accounts for a cold-email product: the per-account fee breaks unlimited-inbox pricing (Build costs and team, MVP spec).
  • Treat its thresholds as the market standard. 5%/10% bounce and 0.1%/0.5% complaint pauses are now what agent builders expect from any API, including yours (Sending engine as an API).
  • Calendar matters for meeting-booking agents. An AI SDR that books meetings needs calendar access; integrate with Nylas or Google/Microsoft calendars rather than building it.
  • Expect Nylas in AI SDR deals. Agent builders who already use Nylas for their customers' inboxes will try Agent Accounts first for outbound, and hit its abuse thresholds. That is the moment to offer a cold-specific engine.
