Hunter shows how to turn a free utility into search traffic without publishing personal data. The tool pages, "Email Finder: Free email search by name" and its siblings, take the head terms. The results they generate, such as /try/search/stripe.com, are marked noindex, nofollow and blocked in robots.txt. Programmatic scale comes from 6,228 "websites using [technology]" pages, not from people or company pages.
Footprint
The six sitemaps listed in robots.txt contain 24 files and 8,064 URLs (crawled 5 October 2026).
| Section | URLs | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| /technologies | 6,228 | "789 websites using 6sense (2026) • Hunter TechLookup" |
| /templates | 574 | Email templates by use case: SEO, link building, sales |
| /blog | 285 | Cold email and outreach |
| /prompts | 113 | AI prompts for lead generation |
| /zh-CN | 89 | Chinese email-list pages |
| /integrations | 77 | 11 integrations × 7 languages |
| /api | 70 | API docs × 7 languages |
| /changelog | 55 | Product news, now heavily about AI assistants |
| /cold-email-guide · /email-verification-guide | 38 · 22 | Long-form guides |
| /ceo- /cmo- /cfo- /cto-email-list/[country] | 28 each | Role-by-country list pages |
Roughly 45 core product and tool pages exist in seven languages (English plus French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian and Japanese), and the homepage carries 23 hreflang tags. In October 2026 the sitemap gave 6,139 technology URLs a fresh lastmod, consistent with a data refresh or a bulk re-stamp.
What ranks
From Semrush's public overview for August 2026, a third-party estimate: 322.15K organic search visits, up 14% month on month. That is second only to Apollo in this group. Total visits were 3.22M, Authority Score 54 (the highest here), 17.15K referring domains and 136.9K backlinks. The United States accounts for 21.8% of visits; Bangladesh's 22.7% looks like panel noise.
The The keyword landscape terms Hunter targets are generic and high-volume: "email finder", "email verifier", "find email address", "reverse email lookup", "disposable email checker", "SPF record generator" and "DMARC generator". Each has its own tool page in seven languages. /email-finder carries SoftwareApplication and AggregateRating schema. The brand's 600,000-user Chrome extension (Chrome Web Store count, October 2026) keeps branded search strong.
Hunter's actual position for "email finder" and "email verifier" was not verified: there was no SERP tool, and Semrush's keyword table is paywalled. The page set and the authority score are consistent with top-three positions, but that is inference.
Programmatic and template plays
Technology pages (6,228). Websites using 6sense runs about 1,100 words with FAQPage schema. Its meta description promises "a ranked sample of the domains Hunter detects it on… and the email addresses held for each". This is BuiltWith's model aimed at outbound: someone searching "companies using HubSpot" is a list-builder, so the page sells lists. Of everything Hunter publishes, these pages are the most template-driven.
Role-by-country lists. CEO email list: France is about 2,200 words across seven languages. It covers four roles in four countries, plus bundles such as "CEO email list France banking". This is the same "[role] email list" query Apollo and Saleshandy chase, at a far smaller scale.
Templates (574). 28 Best Email Templates for Link Building (2026) is about 2,600 words. Unlike lemlist's single-sequence pages, these are hub pages that each collect many templates. Hunter's audience is wider than sales: link builders, PR and recruiters. See Glossaries, template and prompt libraries.
What Hunter does not index. /try/search/*, /search*, /companies, /find, /discover* and /leads* are all disallowed, and the result pages carry noindex, nofollow. Hunter could publish millions of "[domain] email format" pages and has chosen not to. That is the line Apollo eventually retreated behind and Clay has crossed. See Programmatic SEO.
One leak: /fr/technologies/6sense serves the English page with a self-referencing canonical and index, follow. It is not in the sitemap, so the harm is small, but it is the same fake-localisation pattern seen on lemlist.
AEO posture
Hunter is the most agent-oriented of the group:
- robots.txt opens with a Content Signals policy:
Content-Signal: search=yes, ai-input=yes, ai-train=no. Retrieval and grounding are allowed; training is not. No individual AI bot is blocked. - llms.txt (3.8 KB) and llms-full.txt (13.1 KB) are not marketing copy. They are setup guides for the hosted MCP server (
mcp.hunter.io/mcp) and the REST API. robots.txt explicitly allows/agents.md,/claude.md,/chatgpt.mdand/gemini.md, which are click-by-click setup guides for each assistant. - The sitemap has
/chatgpt-app,/claude-plugin,/gemini-appand/grok-botlanding pages in seven languages. /pricing.mdreturns HTTP 200 but serves the HTML pricing page, not Markdown, so it fails the convention it imitates.
Hunter is betting that AI assistants become a distribution surface for its tools, not just a source of citations. See llms.txt, pricing.md and AI crawlers and Who AI answer engines recommend.
Subdomains
There are 83 hosts in certificate logs and 38 live. Many are internal tools behind Cloudflare Access (noindex). Public ones:
| Host | What it is |
|---|---|
| help.hunter.io | Help centre, indexable (robots: all) |
| blog.hunter.io | Redirects to /blog/ (consolidated) |
| link-builders.hunter.io | "Hunter.io SaaS Link Building Community" |
| logos.hunter.io | Redirects to /api/logo, "Free Company Logo API" |
| mailtracker.hunter.io | Redirects to getmailtracker.com, a separate free Gmail tracker brand |
| affiliates. / affiliate-resources. | Affiliate programme (noindex) |
| mcp.cms.hunter.io | "Hunter CMS MCP": the CMS is driven by AI agents |
The logo API and MailTracker are classic side-project marketing: free utilities that earn links back to the main domain. See Subdomain strategy.
Off-site
- Chrome extension: 600,000 users. It is the biggest off-site asset, since it lives where prospecting happens.
- Link-building community: a dedicated subdomain for SaaS link builders, an audience that links to things for a living.
- YouTube: the channel linked from hunter.io has 1.98K subscribers and 107 videos. Video is barely used.
- Integrations: 11 integration pages, including Clay, put Hunter inside other tools' marketplaces.
- No founder brand comparable to lemlist's.
Weak spots
- Thin programmatic tail. 6,228 technology pages built on one template are the kind of scaled content Google's spam policies target.
- A fake pricing.md that serves HTML.
- Locale leaks on technology pages.
- Weak video presence in a category where Woodpecker and lemlist invest.
- The sending product is not what ranks. Search builds a data-tool brand, and the capped Campaigns product gets little lift from it.
What this means for an entrant
- Copy the line Hunter draws. Index tool pages and noindex the generated results. For an EU entrant this is also the GDPR-safe line.
- Ship free tools aimed at agencies' weekly problems. A deliverability checker, a reply classifier demo and a recipient-country legality check. Hunter shows each tool page can hold a head term for years. See Free tools as SEO and lead magnets.
- Copy the agent files in week one. Content-Signal in robots.txt, llms.txt as a setup guide, and per-assistant
.mdpages. An MCP server for the The reply desk ("triage my replies") fits this pattern exactly. - Treat Hunter as a partner, not a rival. It feeds sequencers. An integration page on hunter.io is a backlink and a distribution channel.
- Do not build technology-lookup pages. Without Hunter's crawl data they would be thinner still.
