Apollo was the textbook case of database-to-SEO: a public page for every person and company in a database Apollo's llms.txt puts at 240M+ contacts. That era is over. On 5 October 2026, any URL under /people/, /companies/ or /directory/ returned HTTP 410 Gone, including made-up paths, so the whole pattern has been retired. robots.txt also disallows /directory/*.
What remains is a large, conventional content operation: a 1,717-URL "insights" library, plus role, industry and job-title pages that send searchers into the product.
Footprint
The crawler read the 10 sitemaps that robots.txt lists and stopped at its cap (the data file notes that "Apollo's sitemap is far larger"). Counts are a floor.
| Section | URLs | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| /insights | 1,717 | Glossary and how-to: "What is a sales funnel", "Inbound vs outbound" |
| /academy | 153 | Product training |
| /what-is | 124 | Job-title pages: "What is an accountant? How to sell to accountants" |
| /magazine | 119 | Older editorial, much of it from 2023 |
| /roles | 79 | Role lists: "Attorney contact list" |
| /leads | 64 | Industry lists: roofer, HVAC, plumbing |
| /product | 40 | Feature pages |
| /newsroom | 20 | Press |
Localisation is minimal: Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese cover only about 9–10 core pages each (home, pricing, demo, sign-up). The insights library is English only.
What ranks
From Semrush's public overview for August 2026, a third-party estimate: 469.32K organic search visits (−2% month on month), 176.39K paid search visits (−30%), Authority Score 53, 22.54K referring domains and 591.53K backlinks. That is the largest organic figure of any player in this group.
Semrush also reports 26.44M total visits, but 44.6% of them come from Bangladesh and are almost all desktop. That looks like panel or bot noise, not buyers.
An October 2025 agency write-up claimed "620.2K+ monthly organic traffic" and "1.8M+ pages indexed on Google", built from company-financials, employee and competitor-list templates. The article gives no source for either number and contains obvious machine-written errors. A fall from 620K to 469K would fit the directory's removal, but the two figures come from different methods.
When Apollo switched the directory to 410, and why, is not documented. The Wayback Machine refused our query. The sitemap-410.xml listed in robots.txt returned HTTP 500 ("Error generating sitemap") on 5 October 2026. Apollo has made no public statement that we found.
Likely reasons, all inference: GDPR and data-broker exposure from public person pages (opt-out services such as Optery publish Apollo removal guides); thin-content risk under Google's scaled-content policies; and LinkedIn pressure. LinkedIn removed Apollo's company page on 7 March 2025 alongside Seamless.AI's, then later restored it. See Data sourcing law.
Programmatic and template plays
The directory has been replaced by intent pages that hold no personal data:
- /leads/roofer, "Roofing Leads That Convert", about 1,600 words. /roles/attorney-list, "Attorney Contact List & Verified Law Firm Directory", about 1,900 words. These target "[industry] email list" and "[role] contact list" queries, the same play as Saleshandy's 132 email-list pages and Hunter's CEO lists.
- /what-is/accountant, about 3,000 words. Its H1 reads "What is a Accountant? How to Sell, Connect, and Close". It is a template: job-title definition plus a sales angle, across 124 titles.
- /insights. The sales-funnel page is about 2,500 words, retitled "Non-Linear Framework for 2026". This is a 1,700-page glossary competing with HubSpot and Salesforce for top-of-funnel sales terms.
The pages are long, well structured and kept current. They are also interchangeable with what every other sales-software site publishes.
AEO posture
Apollo is the most open of the group:
- llms.txt: 37.8 KB with 206 links. Sections cover company facts, features, solutions by role, size and motion, API endpoints, "Apollo MCP and CLI", Academy, and insights. There is no llms-full.txt or pricing.md.
- robots.txt explicitly allows GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, cohere-ai, Google-Extended and CCBot. It also allows AhrefsBot, SemrushBot and MJ12bot. Apollo wants to be measured and cited everywhere.
- JSON-LD: AggregateRating, Organization and Person on the homepage; FAQPage, Offer and OfferCatalog on pricing.
The posture matches a company whose product is now sold as an "AI GTM system". If assistants answer "find me a list of roofers", Apollo wants to be the source they cite. See llms.txt, pricing.md and AI crawlers.
Subdomains
There are 69 hosts in certificate logs and 17 live. Search-relevant ones:
| Host | Note |
|---|---|
| docs.apollo.io | Developer docs (indexable) |
| knowledge.apollo.io | Zendesk help centre; returned 403 and noindex to our probe |
| events.apollo.io | Goldcast, noindex |
| design.apollo.io | Design system on zeroheight, noindex |
| netlify.apollo.io | Full homepage mirror; canonical points to www |
| status. / trust. | Standard |
| cognition.apollo.io | "Cognition: Modern Marketing Operating System". Relationship to Apollo unclear |
The help centre is the odd one out: it is not indexable, so support content earns no search value. See Subdomain strategy.
Off-site
- YouTube: @apolloio has 33.9K subscribers and 382 videos (5 October 2026).
- Affiliates and resellers: /partners/affiliates, /partners/api-reseller and an affiliate programme terms page. Apollo pays others to rank "best sales intelligence tool" lists. See Affiliate and review-site SEO.
- Paid search: Semrush estimates 176K paid visits, far more than anyone else here. Apollo buys the category.
- Reddit and promos: /lp/brand/reddit and startup promo pages (for example "basic-19-startup-promo") show deliberate community and startup acquisition.
- Product-led loop: the free plan and Chrome extension are the real engine. Search mainly feeds sign-ups. See Apollo.io.
Weak spots
- The moat is gone. Directory pages were the one asset competitors could not copy. Without them, Apollo is a big glossary.
- Broken plumbing. sitemap-410.xml returns HTTP 500, and robots.txt still disallows
/directory/*, which stops Google from seeing the 410s it is meant to process. - Template grammar. "What is a Accountant" sits in the H1 of a 3,000-word page.
- English only beyond about ten core pages, despite Apollo's European user base.
- Non-indexable help centre.
What this means for an entrant
- Do not build person-level pages. If Apollo, with its legal budget, retired them, an EU-based entrant subject to GDPR should not start. Clay is now the one taking that risk.
- "Apollo alternative" demand is permanent. The Apollo.io page shows the sequencer is the part buyers outgrow. Target "Apollo sequencer alternative" and "Apollo deliverability" comparisons, not data queries. See Comparison and alternatives pages.
- Match Apollo's AEO openness on day one. A detailed llms.txt and explicit AI-bot allows are cheap. Apollo shows the incumbents are already optimising for assistants. See AEO playbook: being the answer.
- Skip the glossary race. 1,700 insights pages at Authority Score 53 is not a race to join. Win narrow EU queries such as "cold email Germany legal" or "DSGVO cold email" that Apollo's English-only library ignores.
