Reviews of these tools split cleanly by site. On G2, where vendors run review campaigns, every major sequencer scores 4.5–4.8. On Trustpilot, where unhappy buyers go, Smartlead has as many 1-star reviews as 5-star reviews, a quarter of Instantly's reviews are 1-star, and Trustpilot has withheld the TrustScore of two vendors (Instantly and Saleshandy) for breaching its guidelines. The most common angry review is not "my emails went to spam". It is "you kept charging me after I cancelled".
Deliverability is what buyers fear. Billing is what makes them furious. You can't promise inbox placement, but you can promise one-click cancellation and no add-ons switched on behind the buyer's back, and that addresses the most common 1-star complaint in the category.
The scoreboard
All figures were captured in early October 2026. G2 counts move weekly and different G2 pages showed different totals for the same vendor (see Contradictions in the research notes).
| Vendor | Trustpilot | 1★ share | G2 | Loudest complaint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instantly | Score withheld (guideline breach), 1,170 reviews | 25% | 4.8 (4,136) | Billing after cancellation |
| Smartlead | 3.0 (140) | 46% | 4.5 (419–449) | Slow or no support |
| lemlist | 4.7 (245) | 12% | 4.6 (1,919–2,268) | Pricing, add-on seats |
| Apollo | 3.1 (1,346) | 36% | — | Data quality, credits |
| Saleshandy | Score withheld (fake reviews removed), 779 reviews | 3% | — | Billing after cancellation |

Trustpilot says Saleshandy breached its guidelines and that fake reviews were removed. Instantly's score is also withheld for a guideline breach. G2 runs incentive campaigns. Treat 5-star totals as a measure of marketing effort and read the 1-star text for signal.
Complaint categories
These are counts from the first page of Trustpilot low-star reviews (mostly August–September 2026) plus G2 tag counts. The sample is small and directional, not a census.

What the reviews actually say
Billing (Instantly). "Charged me for a subscription that I supposedly canceled" (Sep 22). Another reviewer says they were "double charged ... for two accounts ... continued charging for 6 months" (Sep 4). A third: "Literally every other tool is blocked behind a paywall that isn't shown UNTIL you've purchased" (Sep 9). All three are on Trustpilot. The paywall complaint follows from Instantly's modular pricing: Outreach, SuperSearch credits, CRM, Website Visitors and Inbox Placement are billed separately.
Support (Smartlead). "Spent 2 months trying with their customer support ... NO success" (Feb 7). Reviewers also describe repeated questions that read like an AI agent (Trustpilot). On G2, Smartlead's support score is 8.6 against Instantly's 9.5 (G2).
Deliverability (Smartlead, Instantly). Smartlead reviewers mention domains listed on SURBL despite warmup and bounces that "hurt my Email Reputation" (Trustpilot). An Instantly reviewer: "After 2 weeks ... my first campaign wasn't sending" (Sep 14).
Pricing creep (lemlist). Reviewers say $9 sender add-ons were not obvious from plan descriptions ("pricing structure is quite misleading", Sep 19, 2026) and that features were removed "to up-sell" (Sep 18) (Trustpilot).
Data (Apollo). "Well over 65% bounce and failed rate" (Sep 28). Others complain that credits don't roll over and describe "24 messages ... contradictory advice" from support (Trustpilot). See Contact data and enrichment and Email verification.
Abuse. Several 1-star reviews of Instantly come from people who receive AI-generated junk sent through it (Trustpilot). For a platform, that is reputational risk; see Platform liability: what the sequencer itself risks.

| lemlist | Ease of use (585), personalisation + multichannel (370), support speed | Prospeo |
| Saleshandy | CRM included from starter plans, value against Instantly | Trustpilot |

Switching triggers
Reddit itself was blocked to this pass. A July 2026 synthesis of r/coldemail and r/Emailmarketing threads (Ciela) and the review sites above point to five triggers:
- Cost that grows with contacts and seats. Instantly's contact-based tiers get expensive at volume, so heavy senders move to Smartlead or EmailBison. "Expensive" is Instantly's most common G2 complaint (198).
- Per-client fees for agencies. At $29 per client per month, "10 clients costs $290/mo in white-label fees alone before sending begins" (Prospeo). This pushes agencies to EmailBison's $599 flat plan. See Lead-gen agencies.
- Support ghosting during an outage. A burnt domain plus a support queue that takes days is the moment people leave Smartlead.
- Deliverability drops blamed on the shared pool. EmailBison's entire pitch is "dedicated-IP cold email infrastructure for agencies that can't afford shared-pool bleed" (GTM Directory). See Does warmup work? and Reputation and blocklists.
- Data that bounces. Apollo users leave for waterfall enrichment (Clay) and separate verification.
In the Ciela synthesis, practitioners repeatedly say deliverability depends more on authentication, warmup discipline and list quality than on the sequencer (Ciela). Buyers have learned that the platform is mostly interchangeable. Price, support and trust decide who wins.
Thread-level Reddit counts (how many r/coldemail posts mention account bans, warmup failures or billing for each vendor) could not be collected because reddit.com blocks the fetcher. Capterra pages were also unavailable. A proper scrape of r/coldemail is the next research step.
What this means for an entrant
- Make billing honesty a feature and say so publicly. That means one-click cancellation, no add-ons switched on by default, prorated refunds and an emailed receipt for every change. Billing is the most common 1-star complaint about Instantly and also shows up for Smartlead and Saleshandy. It costs almost nothing to fix.
- Staff support with humans who understand DNS. Smartlead's weak point is support. EmailBison wins on private Slack channels. A shared Slack channel with a named deliverability engineer, sold to agencies, is a defensible offer.
- Price on one axis buyers can predict. Complaints about lemlist's $9 seats and Instantly's paywalled modules show that stacking add-ons breeds resentment. See Pricing landscape.
- Police abuse visibly. Reviews from people who receive spam through Instantly show that platform reputation is now a review-site issue. Publish your acceptable-use enforcement. See Provider rules: Google, Microsoft and the ESPs.
- Don't buy your G2 score. Every incumbent sits at 4.5–4.8 on G2, so a high G2 score sets no one apart. A Trustpilot profile with a real distribution and public replies to every 1-star review does.
