Email verification

Standard SMTP verification costs $0.50–$8 per thousand and is being absorbed into finders and sequencers; the only part with pricing power left is catch-all verification.

The read
Standard verification is a feature, not a business; catch-all resolution is the one hard problem left, and whoever solves it inside the send flow wins the bounce budget.

Verifying an email address against its mail server is a solved, commoditised problem. Prices on vendor pages in October 2026 span forty-fold for the same job: Reoon sells 10,000 checks for $11.90 while ZeroBounce's pay-as-you-go starts at $39 for 2,000. Buyers who know this pay the bottom of the range. Sequencers increasingly do not make them pay at all: Smartlead bundles 2,000 to 170,000 verified emails into its plans, and most finders on Contact data and enrichment verify before they charge.

What is not solved is the catch-all domain, one that accepts mail for any address, so an SMTP probe cannot tell a real mailbox from a typo. That is where the remaining pricing power, and the remaining bounces, live.

Why bounce rates matter

Bounces are the cheapest signal a mailbox provider has that a sender is buying lists. Instantly's 2026 benchmark report, built on its own 2025 sending data, sets the "ideal bounce rate" below 2%. Most sequencers pause a mailbox or campaign automatically when bounces cross a threshold (see Bounce protection). Above that, reputation decays at the domain level, which is the expensive asset in Reputation and blocklists and Volume math: what 10k and 100k emails a day cost. The rule set behind this is on Google and Yahoo sender rules and Microsoft rules: Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 limits.

The practical consequence: one bad list can burn a set of domains that cost weeks of Warmup networks to build. Verification is insurance on infrastructure, priced at a fraction of a cent per address.

Gap in the record

No current, sourced figure for annual B2B email list decay was found. The commonly quoted "22–30% per year" could not be traced to a dated primary source; ZeroBounce's list-decay report URL returned 404.

Standard verification: price per 1,000

All prices as shown on vendor pages, October 2026. Cost per 1,000 is my arithmetic where the vendor shows only package prices.

So what

The premium brands (ZeroBounce, NeverBounce) cost four to twenty times what MillionVerifier and Reoon charge, and none of them publishes an independent accuracy test. The price gap is brand and compliance paperwork, not detection quality we can measure.

Catch-all verification: the hard part

Catch-all ("accept-all") domains are common in B2B because many corporate gateways accept everything and sort it later. A standard verifier returns "unknown" or "risky". Sending to all of them raises bounces; skipping them throws away a large share of a list.

Three approaches are on the market in October 2026:

ApproachVendorsPrice signalTrade-off
Inference without sendingBounceBan ("97%+ accuracy", "over 90% of catchall emails" supported), LeadMagic, Enrow (included), Icypeas (included)Bundled, or 1 credit per successful checkFast; accuracy is a vendor claim
Send a real probe email and watchScrubby Deep Verification3 credits; $47/mo for 6,000 credits (~$7.83/1k quick, ~$23/1k deep)Slow: "first results in 24 hrs, final in 72 hrs"; sending is itself a deliverability act
Flag and segmentReoon ("send with caution, as a separate segment"), DeBounce (10 credits)CheapLeaves the decision to the user

FullEnrich claims an 80% success rate on catch-all verification and BetterContact includes catch-all validation at no extra charge on higher tiers. Catch-all resolution has moved from a separate product into the finder credit in under two years.

Not verified

BounceBan's 97% and FullEnrich's 80% are vendor claims with no published method or sample. Scrubby's "no unknowns" claim was not tested.

Who is absorbing verification

AbsorberWhat they bundle (Oct 2026)
FindersFindymail includes 5,000 verifier credits with 5,000 finds and guarantees <5% bounce; BetterContact verifies through Bouncer inside the credit
SequencersSmartlead bundles verified emails per plan; Saleshandy charges $0 for unverified emails and runs ZeroBounce and BounceBan in its waterfall; Hunter verifies at 0.5 credit
Data platformsClay runs verifiers as waterfall steps

The verifiers are becoming wholesale suppliers, the same pattern as finders. See Built-in email verification for how the sequencers implement it.

What this means for an entrant

  • Bundle standard verification free. At ~$0.50–1.20 per 1,000 wholesale (Reoon, MillionVerifier, DeBounce rates above), verifying every lead costs less than a mailbox per month for most customers. Charging for it reads as nickel-and-diming.
  • Make catch-all a send policy, not a lookup. Route catch-all addresses to a separate inbox pool with its own bounce budget and stop sending the moment that pool's bounces cross 2%. No sequencer we checked does this automatically. See the openings.
  • Re-verify at send time, not import time. Lists sit for weeks between enrichment and the third follow-up. A cheap re-check before step one closes that gap.
  • Do not build an SMTP verifier. It is a race to $0.45 per 1,000. License one, keep two suppliers for redundancy, and compete on what you do with the result.
  • Publish your own bounce data. You will see real bounces across every customer. A quarterly bounce report by data source is free marketing and the neutral benchmark this market lacks.
