The usual story is that cold-email software is sold by affiliates: YouTubers and bloggers on 20–40% recurring commission writing "best cold email software" listicles (Distribution). The search results tell a slightly different story. For the head terms we checked, the biggest group of results is other vendors' comparison content: Hunter, Snov.io, Woodpecker, Reply.io, La Growth Machine and a long tail of small tools. Independent affiliates are a minority. The market leaders barely appear for their own category and comparison queries.
The searches ran on 5 October 2026 through the search tool available to this pass. It is not a logged-out Google results page and returns about nine results without ads, video or Reddit carousels. Treat positions as indicative. A Google rank tracker would sharpen every number below.

"best cold email tools 2026": coldreach.ai, Yesware, Snov.io (two posts), Mailshake, Hunter, Enginy: seven vendors; plus hackceleration.com (review site) and toolradar.com (directory). In the same week, a sibling pass found lemlist's "best cold email software 2026" first for the singular query (lemlist: search teardown).
"instantly alternative" / "instantly.ai alternatives" (the tally counts the second): alternativeto.net (for a different product called Design Instantly), aiapps.com, thedailyworkflow.com, aigregator, GetApp NZ for an unrelated "instantinterior ai", a Japanese dictionary, and a spam post on an Appian community forum. No cold-email vendor appeared, including Instantly's own "instantly-alternatives" post.
"instantly.ai review": joinsecret.com (two pages), a Trustpilot review, three G2 compare pages with odd pairings (Instantly vs Level AI, vs Observe AI, vs Writesonic), a PDF on fsc.org titled "instantly claw bonus" and a hackmd.io "OTOReview" page. The last two are parasite spam on high-authority hosts, the pattern Google's site reputation abuse policy targets.
"best cold email software reddit" and "instantly vs smartlead reddit": Zapier, Smartlead's blog (twice across the two), Woodpecker, Small Business Trends, Salesmate, Bardeen, Reply.io, the Clay community (twice), G2's compare page, a siit.co "guestposts" page and an agency. No reddit.com result, despite "reddit" in the query.

The category and comparison SERPs are a vendor-on-vendor fight. Challengers write about the leaders because buyers search for the leaders. A rival's "Smartlead vs Instantly" post outranks both companies' own pages. An entrant does not need affiliates to show up here, only better comparison pages (Comparison and alternatives pages).
Instantly's brand-collision problem
"Instantly" is a common English adverb. Its brand queries pick up unrelated products (Design Instantly, Instant.bot, instantinterior) and spam pages that use the word to rank for bonus and coupon schemes. Similarweb lists Instantly's top organic keywords as "instantly pricing", "instantly mcp", "instantly.ai", "instantly ai" and "instantly" (Similarweb, Aug 2026, panel estimate), so users have learned to add ".ai". Instantly gets about 78% of its visits from direct traffic on the same estimate. It lives on brand and word of mouth, not on category search (Instantly: SEO teardown).
Review platforms
G2 is where the leaders' gap is widest. On G2's Instantly vs Smartlead page (fetched 5 October 2026), Instantly has 4.8 stars from 4,157 reviews and Smartlead 4.5 from 451. Quality of support scores 9.5 vs 8.6 and ease of use 9.4 vs 8.8. Both are rated mostly by small businesses (94.8% and 92.9%). Instantly's JSON-LD claims 4.8 from 3,838 reviews, apparently an older G2 snapshot, on every expert and prompt page (Programmatic SEO).
A 9:1 review count is a moat that compounds. G2 compare pages rank for brand-versus-brand queries, and review volume decides the order on G2's category grids. In our results G2 surfaced only on review and Reddit-modified queries, never on the category head term.
We could not load G2's "Cold Email Software" category grid, Capterra rankings or Trustpilot totals for each vendor in this pass. Grid positions and badges are unverified.
Where affiliates actually sit
Affiliate content shows up on the edges of the head terms (marketermilk, influencermarketinghub, hackceleration) and, by the vendors' own design, in video and community channels our search tool does not index. Distribution documents the commission ladders: Instantly 20–40% recurring, Smartlead 15–35% for life. The info economy covers the course creators who teach students to buy Instantly or Smartlead. Two signs of affiliate traffic did show up in search:
- A Salesforge directory URL in results carried a
?via=referral parameter. Affiliates link to vendor-owned programmatic pages, not only to home pages. - Instantly's affiliate programme has French and Italian landing pages (
/fr/affilie-copy,/it/affiliato) that are missing from its sitemap. The programme is localised even though the marketing site is not.
YouTube is probably the largest affiliate surface, and we could not measure it. Channel subscriber counts did not render reliably for us. Video results are missing from our search tool. We have no data on how much revenue affiliates drive for any vendor. Reddit's weight in Google results, widely reported since 2024, could not be checked with this tool: r/coldemail has ~75,000 members per GummySearch, but we could not see whether its threads rank.
What this means for an entrant
- Write the comparison content yourself; don't wait for affiliates. Vendors hold 27 of 63 head-term results. A dated "Smartlead vs Instantly for agencies" page plus "EmailBison vs Smartlead" (EmailBison has a thin footprint) are realistic top-10 targets within months (Comparison and alternatives pages).
- Pick a brand that cannot collide. Avoid common words. Check that "
review", " alternative" and " pricing" return only you before you register the domain. - Start a G2 review engine at customer 10, not customer 1,000. Ask for a review after the first booked meeting comes in through the reply desk (The reply desk). Instantly's 4,157 reviews took years. The first 50 decide whether you appear on compare pages at all.
- Seed Reddit and the Clay community as yourself. Answer threads under a named founder account with data, not links. The Clay community ranks for "Instantly vs Smartlead", and r/coldemail is where agencies ask.
- Pay affiliates for agencies, not students. A flat 35–40% lifetime commission from the first referral beats both leaders' ladders (Distribution). Recruit agency-ops creators and EU agency networks rather than "start an agency" channels, whose referrals churn (Lead-gen agencies).
- Watch for parasite pages on your brand. Once you have search demand, coupon and "bonus" spam will target it. Monitor brand SERPs monthly and file spam reports.
