Comparison pages are the most contested inventory in cold-email search because they catch buyers who are already choosing. Almost every vendor publishes them. The volume leader is not one of the two market leaders. Salesforge has 592 English URLs with "vs", "alternative", "comparison" or "review" in the path. That is more than La Growth Machine (223) and Apollo (201) combined.
The second finding is a strategy we did not expect. Most of Salesforge's 248 "vs" pages, 181, do not mention Salesforge. They compare two rivals ("smartlead-vs-instantly", "lemlist-vs-apollo", "hunter-io-vs-apollo-io"). Neutral-looking pages rank for rival-versus-rival queries, and Salesforge then pitches its own tools from the sidebar.
Who publishes how many
Counts are unique English URLs from each sitemap on 5 October 2026, matched on path keywords (vs, versus, alternative, compar, review). "Name Instantly / Smartlead" leaves out integration and template pages.
| Vendor | vs / alt / review URLs | vs pages not naming the publisher | Name Instantly | Name Smartlead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforge | 592 | 181 of 248 | 26 | 19 |
| La Growth Machine | 223 | 55 of 100 | 15 | 14 |
| Apollo.io | 201 | 17 of 104 | 2 | 2 |

| Instantly | 131 | 63 of 86 | — | 10 |
| 11x | 112 | 5 of 36 | 2 | 0 |
| Saleshandy | 102 | 23 of 31 | 7 | 6 |

| Smartlead | 61 | 24 of 35 | 1 | — |

"Not naming the publisher" includes concept pages such as Instantly's "inbound vs outbound" posts, so it overstates rival-vs-rival pages for Instantly. For Salesforge, the 97-page /comparison/ section shows the pattern directly: "smartlead-vs-instantly", "lemlist-vs-waalaxy", "outreach-vs-salesloft" sit next to "salesforge-vs-emailbison" (sitemap).
Three other patterns:
- La Growth Machine runs three-way templates. "expandi-vs-instantly-vs-lgm", "heyreach-vs-smartlead-vs-lgm", "waalaxy-vs-instantly-vs-lgm" and more: each puts LGM third in a pairing someone already searches for. It also hosts rival-vs-rival pages ("apollo-vs-clay", "cognism-vs-waalaxy") in six languages (The long tail: SEO at a glance).
- EmailBison's blog is mostly comparison. 21 of its 67 URLs are vs pages, including EmailBison vs Instantly and vs Smartlead. For a vendor with no other footprint, the brand-plus-rival query is the whole SEO plan.
- Smartlead avoids Instantly. Its 11-page
/comparison/section covers Amplemarket, Klenty, lemlist, Outreach, OutreachBin, QuickMail, Saleshandy, Snov and Apollo, plus two dialer pages. Instantly is missing. The only Smartlead URL naming Instantly is a blog post, "instantly-alternatives". Instantly goes the other way, with "comparing-instantly-vs-smartlead", "smartlead-alternatives", "instantly-smartlead-user-feedback" and an "instantly-vs-smartlead-roi-calculator".
Tone and honesty
We read six pages that attack a leader or a rival (5 October 2026).
| Page | Sharpest claim (quoted) | Concedes anything? | Prices and date? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instantly: Instantly vs Smartlead | "Base price low, add-ons multiply cost 3-5x" | Yes: Smartlead's API, native CRM integrations, interface | Yes; Jan 2026, updated May 2026; TCO $2,328 vs $2,868/yr |
| EmailBison vs Instantly | "Growth and Hypergrowth plans use shared IP pools" | Yes: 450M-contact database, GUI-first, release speed | Yes; Nov 2025; $599 vs Instantly's tiers |
| Amplemarket: what Instantly really costs | Full stack for 5 users "typically reaches $13,000 to $26,000 per year" | Yes: "at 5 users, Instantly tends to win" | Yes; Apr 2026 |
| MailReach on Instantly deliverability | "Instantly is not a dedicated deliverability platform" | Partly: fine at small scale | Updated Jun 2026; Reddit and G2 quotes, no test data |
| Smartlead vs lemlist | "Lemwarm runs blind" | No | Prices yes; no date |
| PlusVibe: Instantly alternative | Instantly "may offer more complex functionalities that can be overwhelming" | No | No prices; page still branded pipl.ai |
Our read:
- Specific attacks with concessions read as credible. Instantly, EmailBison and Amplemarket each give the rival a win and attach numbers to their own. Amplemarket's TCO argument gives a reader something to check. These are the pages to copy.
- The attacks on Instantly repeat four themes: shared IP and warmup pools (EmailBison, MailReach), stacked cost of add-ons and credits (Amplemarket), support quality (EmailBison) and complexity (PlusVibe). The same "add-ons multiply the cost" line is what Instantly uses against Smartlead, so each leader's critics use the same argument.
- Undated, unpriced feature grids are the weakest form. PlusVibe's table credits Instantly with no spam checker, AI copywriter or spintax. Instantly ships nested spintax and an "AI Spintax Writer", so the claim is checkable and wrong (Spintax and message variants). A buyer who checks stops trusting the page.
Several attack pages quote pricing that has since changed, for example EmailBison citing Instantly Growth at $37/mo (the annual-billing rate). Instantly lists Growth at $47/mo monthly as of October 2026 (Pricing landscape). Stale prices on a vs page are the easiest rebuttal a rival has.
Who wins the SERP
For "smartlead vs instantly", our search tool (not a Google SERP) returned nine results. None was from Instantly or Smartlead. Six came from other vendors (Gojiberry, InboxAlly, Woodpecker, Reply.io, Snov.io, Sendkit), one was a Clay community thread and two were agency blogs. For the leaders' head-to-head, third-party vendors own the page. The full SERP records are in Affiliate and review-site SEO.
Woodpecker ranks there although its sitemap index lists no blog URLs. Its blog lives outside the sitemaps the crawler found, which a sitemap count misses.
We have no click data. We do not know whether vs pages convert better than blog traffic, or how much paid search backs them. Salesforge's content lead says its programmatic pages "allow us to bid on competitor-branded keywords" (Surfer, Sep 2026), which suggests that vs and directory pages are partly ad landing pages.
What this means for an entrant
- Write the honest version first: "Smartlead vs Instantly for agencies running 20+ clients", with a dated price table, one concession to each, and a section on what neither does (multi-client reply handling, EU recipient rules). The leaders will not write that page about each other, and third parties are already getting traffic from the query.
- Position as the overlay. Because the wedge runs on top of Smartlead, Instantly and EmailBison (The wedge), "use X with Y" pages ("Reply desk for Smartlead agencies") do not attack anyone and still catch every brand query.
- Date every price and put a "last checked" line on every page. Re-check quarterly. Stale prices are the most common flaw in the pages above.
- Build vs pages from data you have. Placement tests across shared and dedicated pools, response-time measurements of each vendor's support: a numbers-based page outranks the 181 templated ones over time.
- Keep vs pages in English and put the legal angle in German. Outside German, EU buyers use the English product query, and the local-language query is the legal one ("Kaltakquise per E-Mail erlaubt?") (The keyword landscape). One German page, "Instantly, Smartlead und die DSGVO", reaches the buyer at the moment they look for a reason to switch.
